We have a few days to get back to Caen and we’re in no rush to head too far North yet as the weather is still lovely here. So we’ve headed off course a bit to Oradour-sur-Glane, a place I’d heard of but never thought I’d visit.
The 642 inhabitants were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. After the war, General Charles de Gaulle decided the village should never be rebuilt, but would remain a memorial to the cruelty of the Nazi occupation.
This is the church where the women and children were so brutally murdered.
Everything is exactly where it was left on 10th June 1944.
